last blog of my life

Today was our final class of human geo. Overall, I found the class to be entertaining and I felt engaged with the material that we were learning. I am sad that I won't be in a class with these same people again for western civs. The test went well today I think and I can't believe this is our last human geo class ever. The first semester went by so fast and its crazy to think that some of our classes will be switching in a couple days. I enjoyed having the power points on the board because I am a visual learner so it helped me comprehend what was being taught during class. I don't have Mr. Schick next semester, but I am looking forward to a new classroom and experience!

religions essay

There are five major religions that we have talked about in class. The largest religion is Christianity, which consists of around 2.2 billion adherents. Founded by their savior, Jesus Christ, people following Christianity are considered Christians and they are mainly located in Europe, the Americas, and South Africa. Christianity holds a multitude of denominations including the Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Churches, Protestants, Lutherans, Baptists, and many more. They are known for believing that Jesus is both human and the divine Son of God. He lived a righteous life where he was crucified, died, buried, and resurrected. The stories of Jesus are written in the bible, which is the holy book of Christianity.
The second largest religion is known as Islam, consisting of 1.5 billion adherents. These adherents, known as Muslims, are located in mainly Indonesia, the Middle East, and North Africa. The founder of Islam is Muhammad who lived from 570 to 632 and created two main denominations of Islam. These two denominations are the sunnies and shiites. Muslims follow the five pillars and believe their purpose in life is to serve their God, Allan.
Hinduism is the third largest religion. There are 1.1 billion followers known as Hindus. These Hindus are typically located in the two countries of India and Nepal. They use their holy book called the Vedas. This book contains eternal truths that are uncovered to the ancient sages that are sung aloud. Hindus believe in points of view rather than strict beliefs and they have no distinct follower.
The religion containing 500M to around 1.5 billion adherents is Buddhism. These Buddhists are located mainly in Southeast Asia, China, Nepal, and Japan. Siddhartha Gautama is their founder and they have different denominations including Tibetan, Zen, Theravada, and Amidist. Buddhists believe in the four noble truths and they follow the 8 fold path. The 8 fold path is to have the right views, intention, speech, action, livelihood, effort, mindfulness, and dedication.
The last religion we talked about in class was Judaism. This is one of the smallest religions with only 14-18M adherents. The founder of Judaism is Abraham and these Jews are located mostly in Israel and the United States. Jews' holy book is the torah, which is the first 5 books of the Old Testament. Jews believe in ethical monotheism, which means that there is only one God. They also believe in the 10 commandments and the 13 principles of Faith.

review of the religion packet

Today in class we went over the religions packet and finished reviewing it for the test. Our test for the religions unit is going to be on January 17th. It is going to be a Thursday and I am going to have to start studying before that day because there is going to be a lot of new material on the test. I am kind of sad that our classes are switching because I don't really want it to change. I had a good time in this human geo class and I am hoping that next semester our class is still good. I am also kind of sad that the people in this class aren't going to be in my next class for western civs. Overall, this year has been pretty good in human geo and I hope western civs is just as good.

religion packet

Today in Human Geo, we had a shorter class because of the Pow Wow assembly that we had today. As a result, our class was only 45 minutes instead of 55 minutes. Even though we had a shorter class, I felt that our class was still very productive and less talkative than usual. We had been handed a packet about the five main religions about a week ago and today was the day to review this packet. Mr. Schick helped us with what information was necessary to know for the upcoming test on this material. I found that very helpful because it saved us an extreme amount of time, rather than reading the entire almost 15 page packet. Overall, class today was productive and worthwhile for the world religions test.

in class questions

1) The four basic texts in use by the Hindus are the vedas; rig-veda, sama-veda, yajur-veda, and atharva-veda. The Rig-Veda, which has 1,028 hymns, is for recitation of the knowledge of the hymns of praise. Sama-Veda, which consists of 1,549 verses, is for chanting the knowledge of melodies. Yajur-Veda, which contains 1,875 verses, is for liturgy of the sacrificial formulas. Atharva-Veda, which has 730 hymns, is named after a group of priests for the knowledge of the magic formulas.

The practice of indulgences is basically when a person pays the Catholic Church to receive a release or exempt the punishment for a sin they committed. I think this made Martin Luther object to indulgences because he believed it was was not right to promise the exemption of souls from sin based on just a transfer of money. He also felt that the pope didn't have the right to act on God's behalf by granting a pardon from God. My research led to this website on Martin Luther and indulgences: http://courses.wcupa.edu/jones/his101/web/37luther.htm

3) The Hajj is the fifth pilar of Islam. It is a religious task that all Muslims should accomplish in their lives if they are physically able to. It is both an understanding and personal experience. The Hajj has many steps and begins on the 12th month of the Islamic lunar calendar.

ranking religions

1) The five religions ranked in order of the world fact book are Christians at 31.4%, Muslims at 23.2%, Hindus at 15%, Buddhists at 7.1%, and Jews at 0.2% of the world's population. For adherents.com, 33% is Christianity, 21% is Islam, 14% Hinduism, 6% Buddhism, and 0.22% is Judaism for the world's population. I noticed that these percentages are about the same, but there are slight differences in the numbers.
